Why the prohibition in gujarat would stay?
Everywhere in blogs, newspapers, tv talk shows every one seems to be in favour of lifting prohibition, But the sad fact is that it would stay.. the last time someone made a serious effort was with maltmarch.org but they seem to have realised it wont work..
The main reason? Vote Bank.
Any politician who dares to remove prohibition will loose in the comming election that is the surest thing, and modi is already fearful of loosing the next election after seeing the mind blowing performance of the UPA, wouldnt dare to risk it anymore. Certainly modi has tried to relax the laws by lifting prohibition in SEZs. Allowing easy permit to people comming from other states, or countries. Actually an idea of allowing private doctors to give permits was mooted but no decision was taken in that regard.
Modi is afraid of women and middle class voters who are very much in favour of prohibition. Women are afraid that their family members will start drinking or may drink more when liquor is cheaply available, occasional drinkers will turn into daily drinkers,, certainly they have a point its very much possible. The sudden euphoria of legalisation will make even the non-drinker to give it a try.. Families think that there would me more cases of eve-teasing and today in most parts of gujarat girls stay out of home till late night, for eating out, movies, tution or just hanging out with their friends or for chudaing with their bf in some dark corners and it is assumed that they wont be able to do so once the prohibition is lifted,, thats certainly a valid point..
But the point is that the state shouldnt interfere in the choices of a citizen, when the whole world is drinking you cant stop a small group of people from drinking, its straight violation of human rights, humans have a right to drink!. After right to education bill a right to drink bill is needed in gujarat. Like the gays all drinkers need to take out a parade, unless their is organisation and systemic protests the ban will stay, this is just the right time to make the voices heard.. A mass movement of supporters need to get down to the street and make the government listen. But i guess thats not going to happen.. thts how it is…
