A day in the life of India

My experiments with Life

movies and perceptions

Movies are what gives Identity to a nation. The kind of movies a country produces creates the overall perception of that country in the minds of the outsiders. Let me start with the US, when we think of it the first thing that we will remember may be some tv footage, thanks to al quaida we may remember the visual of WTC twin tower. What i am trying to convey is the importance of visual media. Most of us think of US in terms of hollywood, whatever we have seen in the hollywood movies is what US is, its about their efficient FBI, police reaching the scene of crime in instance and yes those super hero flicks. On the whole hollywood is as crappy as bollywood. But hollywood has good number of alternative cinema, some good high quality content is created there, but sadly what bollywood gives the audience is just like its copied name. all copied content, and the tamil cinema, kannda cinema also have their tolly and kolli. Why cant we Indians stop copying at least its just so embarrassing. If we were to see India thru the eyes of bollywood what would we see? all people seem to be so happy in Indian films, they are always singing and dancing.. Whereas in hollywood they have got everything so the only thing they worry about is some distance future, about UFO, and those super heros which will save them from their in existent troubles.. They don’t have troubles so they make troubles in their moves, thanks they now have terrorists so they can focus on that.. Bollywood does make some good moves but afterall they are not that good. i dont like bollywood other than all abhay deol movies and some anurag kashyap ones.
When i think of Iran the first thing that comes to my mind is that wicked picture of ayatollah khomeini and i would have thought iranians to be nothing less than zombies under the spell of ayatollah but what changed my perception towards Iran is their films. They have some fucking Italian cinema inspired neo realistic trend going on and their movies are simply awesome.. the simplest and the most striking one.. Their movies have been so popular in film festivals that it has become a separate genre in itself. They also have a large number of women directors and script writers and you compare that with bolly or holly, there aren’t much women involved. Most of the iranian movies are made around childrens, women and family and its such a pleasure to watch these beautiful work of art. And your are bound to think “Iranians cant be bad”. What i m trying to say here is how perception about a country can be changed with the help of cinema.. So it becomes very important that good quality movies are made.. Film making in muslim countries happens to be a tricky business need to take care of a lot of censor ship. Arab cinema or any other cinema industry of the muslim world has not made any effect on the world cinema scene as the iranian ones, though egypt has a big film industry they just give trash like the bolly wood.
When we look thru bollywood as a whole and even in past we see nothing but trash with some good films thrown in between. Black and white era was good it had some good cinema, then some hrishikesh mukerjee films were watchable, in the name of alternative cinema we just had some amol palekar or naseeruddin shah, or some film development board funded films. But we always had the talent, but we choose consumerism and formula movies.. And what we have in childrens film almost nothing.. one hello, chotta chetan, anjali, or the recent makadee and blue umbrella.. thats just not enuf. Unless there are quality children films these childrens have to grow on these bollywood crap and when they are old enuf they would just hate it, those reducing the overall market for the industry.
We have such a vibrant advertising industry, which are at par with world standards, we have some of the best talents in advertising, with various ad film makers entering into movie making things are changing in bollywood for good atlast. Quality is evidentand is becoming evident now particular in cinematography and post production, content has still a long way to go. But it will take time.. A new trend will emerge sooner or later, the trend of badla movies are over, crappiest 70’s are behind so i guess things are going to improve from here.. because the market and demand for good cinema is increasing day by day..

  1. i think the era of good cinema is almost over, at least in india.. give me a naseer or amol palekar movie anyday and i wont move from the couch.. even in hollywood (as u have correctly said) the crap movies are everywhere. i guess its always like pearls in the sea.. you dont find them everywhere. good is always less in quantity than the horrible.a movie like 'cloverfield' gets bad reviews and a crappy and stereotype flick like Godzilla has millions of fans.. have you followed this movie/book called "twilight".. i was forced to read it by someone and my first reaction was – what in the name of bloody hell is this? i hated it more than i hated the one and only M&B i once read..crap sells i guess…

  2. ya… its an interesting but factfully post..bilkuul sahi likhha hai.. title is also perfect..as we all dont except more from hindi cinema, we are now liking hollywood movies more than hindis.. mujhe to kung-fu wali movies ke stunts wali action movies jyada pasand aati hai, ya fir jamse bond type movies, thodi bahot romantic hindi movies dekh leta hun (jab bore hona hota hai tab),, aur comedy movies ki comedy me ab koi damm hi nahi raha .. lekin….. don worry.. me jab director & producer ban jaaunga tab…it would be the golden age of industry πŸ™‚

  3. A good one. Why the alternative cinema is "ALTERNATIVE" and why the mainstream "Shahrukh-Om Shanti Om-Fardeen Khan-Zayed khan" is main stream cinema. This is the biggest question.I watched Shabana Aazmi and Farouqe Sheikh, live in pune and I was half dead to see them and next half dead after watching them act :DBut complaints never do, so let us not watch Shahrukkkkh and Co πŸ˜€

  6. @maya – try cloverfield… i cudnt move an inch while watching the movie.. may be it was bcz of the trauma of the Mumbai Terror attacks. Cloverfield is about a monster but the way it has been picturized makes it soooo hard-hitting. i cudnt help connect with it the way i felt about the mumbai attacks. it was brutal and beautiful..i highly recommend the movie, even with those bad reviews

  7. That is why I like Satyajit Ray because his movies show all the Indian cultures and stories too are not copied from Hollywood.. I hope the present lot of directors do have some guts to take movies which is not copied from Hollywood. But I do not think all the Hollywood movies are crapy compared to bollywood..

  10. A good analysis … and somehow I feel we have a possessive appetite for feel-good running-around-trees type melodrama. We hate to even analyze why it is. Hollywood also has a trend called Independent Cinema, which is very rarely seen … but they are prized creations. Not to take names and hits, we need to inculcate reality on the screen. Too much make-believe goodness destroys the belief in life. And the real suckers in the name of producers churn out millions from the average mass. That sure is boring.
