A day in the life of India

My experiments with Life

The fairness Riddle

with 25 comments

In tv advertisements the maximum number of products are targeted at women, and the stuff that has a lion’s share of airtime in this category happens to be fairness cream, yeh i know men wala fairness cream is also there. This desire to be fairer can be seen throughout the indian sub-continent. But why is it that we want to be fair, as per tv ads being fair solves half of the problem in your life, want to be a air-hostess (i wont ever understand, y wud anyone want to air-hostess), want to be singer, a star, get a job, get a bf / gf. Everything has only one solution “fairness”. Well i wont say its all crap, but mostly its true, fair skin is preferred. The whole india is seeking this, but why. If we need to understand y, we will have to understand what happens inside our mind.

Psychological angle
First thing i would say, humans prefer white skin, its kind of embeded sense of beauty that we have, it can also be the results that a darker shade also represents “dirt”. Obviously if u were lying in dirt all the time then u will look black. Now this image of dirt and cleanlessness gets built in our mind, and we start preferring fairer skin. I dont see any other reason for universal preference for the fairer skin.

Cultural and economical angle.
The “garibs are always darker”. They have to work in sun all the time, they live in dirt and mud. Their childrens will be darker as well. This also gets transversed into the caste system. The lower cast people have been made to do the hard work throughout history, so they have been genetically having darker skin shade for generations. The white and the black skin is not only about the perception of beauty it divides people in social and economical class. If a statistic based on sucess and colour is carried out, the sum total of money with whiter people will be higher than those of darker people. Its not because of some talent, it was just that for generations they have been leading a comfortable life. Thou lot of things have changed in last few years.
I dont think i need to explain any further, the people living in a.c. rooms and going out with sun-screen lotions would be whiter thats common sense.
So if you are dark and after using fair and lovely will be become rich? yeh most probably you will.

If we consider india which followed strict caste system for most part of its history you can understand this, darker garibs married within their same community giving birth to darker children and aamirs or higher caste people married whiter people having whiter children, one of the reasons why you would find 80% of all brahmins having fair skin. Things have begun to change only recently today a black smith can become a billionaire earlier it was not possible in india due to caste system, he had no other option but to hit the iron. Now what will happen if a dark black smith becomes aamir, he will certainly marry a fair wife, with money you will go only for the best, and they will have fairer children. Now those childrens are white and aamir, thats how it works, if someone is aamir and dark, within 2 generations the whole family would become white no matter if all their ancesors were black for 1000 years.

In the western world where every one has white skin, people prefer tanned skin, because that represents money, if you are tanned it means you have going on vacations regularly and lying on beach regularly, which eventually represents success. So basically skin color represents success and better genes, it represents better genes because if one is fair, it means that some ancestor of their had better genes to live a comfortable life, so those (good) genes could have been transferred into the current fair person. So the fairness thing could be evolutionary thing representing better genes in some part of the world like india, that could be the reason for its preference. lol now i m talking like some fucking anthropologist.

It will become a fuckin long topic if i include the north indian and south india stuff, also the genographic project has come up with the conclusion that north and south indian share the same genes which totally rejects the aryan invasion theory making all indias same. So i guess i dont have to divide the perceptions of north indians and dravidians in this matter, thou south indians are mostly darker, i guess thats because of climate factors alone. But still the preference for fairer skin is equal throughout the indian subcontinent, one of the peculiar factor uniting us indians i would say.

  4. Agree with every point. The main thing, I think, is what you stated is psychological angle. Since we are genetically programmed to select the best… our preference goes towards fairness… Good that the world is changing now… Nice read 🙂

  5. Past week we had been to a hill station. The owner of the resort was an illiterate. He was showing some magic trick and to represent colour he called two people (one was me). He wanted to show that the other person was white and I was black! Grrrr… I wanted to slap him.Sometimes I feel India is the hub of racism with all these people wanting to get fairer.

  7. Fairness creams are unfair, so is the assumption that all blacks are dirty. But give me a pair of dark, dusky beautiful eyes or a white, curvaceous figure … I may drool at both! ;)To me colour isn't important … else why would I crib when I see a white man wandering homeless in the West?

  8. @darsh, the world is changing, but not sure to what extent.@vithal, thts kind of a funny incident@naveen, thats an india specific mentality, and is certainly not applicable outside..@Idle.. i m not talking about conscious assumption, its a sub-conscious assumption, and nobody has control over it..

  9. I completely agree….I have seen the marriages around me..and the first question generally asked is :"ladki sundar hai?" (note:here sundar=fair)..Well I simply not understand why we are so much inclined towards the fair complexion..Some of our bollywood actresses are dusk but still they are beauties!!!

  10. we indians are inclined(heavily and terribly) towards the fairer skin…beauty is the sign of good genes so people naturally wanna look good…fairness creams exploit that…though i do believe that the media has some role to play in this mad rush to achieve fairness….i once attended the (love)marriage of a relative(he was fair)…his wife looked perfectly beautiful to me but all the these elder women were saying.."but she is not fair"…now that is simply ridiculous..

  11. I think people in the west prefer tanned skin but not brown or dark skin. There is still a threshold for darkness.I think every race is biased towards lighter skin.

  13. Lot of truth in this post. But all the psychological factors and economic factors have come only in the era of colonization and after that. The Europeans maintained their superiority and to enforce it they distingushed themselves by their colour. In one stroke they made all white-skins superior. Everything else comes from that. I think it is stupid that we run after keeping our skin fair. We need to take care of our skin. But we can't change the way we were born. Look what Michael Jackson did to himself. We try too hard and we're all going to end up like that.

Well it does matter thats why they sell so much of fairness cream. yeh full of hate, and thts not gonna change

  17. A very well written post. First time here and you have a very interesting take on the whole fairness brigade. The rich have access to fairness! Now there's a thought! Now I can just walk down the road and identify people's bank balance by looking at their skin color. :)Jokes apart I feel those regressive suggestive fairness ads need to be banned.

  18. wow, You know (pardon my francias)but just take your pants off and look at your arse, and your genitals.!! It does not matter how white anyone's face is in India, his wee wee is going to be DARK!!! just think about this next time you see a "fair skinned" person!! I bet you'd laugh!!And yes there is no country as biased as India! especially with the color thing. It is amazing that every one knows that are no fuking cream that can turn your complexion fair!! but still people buy it.Those creams only have bleaching agents or chemicals that take your dead skin away! which makes you look whiter!!Ok, I don't know whether I am right or wrong but I believe that western people have pale skin coz they are inbred, resulting into a fucked up skin. They cannot stand the sun without protection even for mins. they have lot of skin diseases and are more prone to skin cancer! This also proves one more thing. Coz dark people do not have that "FACE that does not need to pay!!" They have to work harder and smarter, making us the Indians more superior in terms of brain functions!! I have also noticed that farther the gene pool of parents , sexier their kids are. Look at half blood people, they are more beautiful and smarter too!
