What is Maya

with 9 comments

I have used the word maya a lot of time, but it can have different meaning for different people, there are different levels of maya, i will just write what i think maya is and its implications in our daily life.

Maya basically means illusion. “Sab Maya hai” (everything is an illusion) is very popular among Hindus. It has its roots in ancient hindu philosophy (its awesome) where its assumed that everything in the world is just an illusion. Its just a reflection of reality rather than reality itself. You can understand this from the movie “matrix” thou its used in the movie in terms of sci-fiction but basically its the same philosophy.

Another way to look at maya is at micro level. We wont consider the whole world as an illusion but will consider human emotions and stuff to be maya. Things that we perceive to be true arent actually true. The importance that we give to career, education, money, love are all wrong, we have been forced to give them importance because of maya.

Everything that binds us into something is maya, maya is the opposite of freedom. Thou we can never be really free but we need to try, to be as free as possible.

Will start with love, love happens just because of hormones. Its just our genes and hormones that is making us fall in love, just like a bee is attracted to flower we are attracted to the opposite sex, here we are not being free but are bound by our hormones. As humans we are more than just an insect or a magnet. The realisation of the fact that we are not loving but are being made to love helps to overcome this maya.

After one falls in love, sex hormones take over, after sex once we have kids everything seems ok. One might believe that one was in charge of all this but actually he wasnt, everything was just like a computer bot designated to do the job, with all the hormones being supplied at the right time to manage us.

The career, money and all are just because we would be able find a better mate. So basically all this maya is just to find a better mating partner to further your genes. One needs to understand where is one in control and where the hormones and genes are taking charge. We are ajeeb creatures, we are free and yet not free. We just live in a illusion of being free but we are just on autopilot.

When one understands this, things begin to appear different. One doesnt gives un-necessary importance to things. It doesnt really matter how much you earn, how sexy a gf you have. What matters is how free you are. How far are you from bondage. One can be happy only when one is free. The money doesnt buy you freedom but it binds you, so does love, career and everything. We dont realise but we are just slaves of this maya. We cant leave the job, we cant stop chasing and hoarding money, we cant stop falling in love. We fucking cant do nothing.

We keep doing what we are supposed to just like those ants or earthworm or a bacteria. We are all fucking big time loosers living under the illusion that we are free. And the biggest irony is that even after knowing that everything is just a trap we all will keep doing the same thing, u, me and everyone else. Whether one has read this post or not at the end wouldnt change a shit in u or me. Because its not easy to just switch off your pc and just walk out on a journey, a journey for freedom. But i will do it sometime, have planned things accordingly, not for ever but may be for a year or two. Will just walk the earth for a while (as jules says in pulp fiction).

If you want to know more about maya in hindu philosophy read wiki here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_(illusion)#Maya_in_Hinduism you dont have to believe that, neither do i believe in it, but its the awesomeness of the idea that attracts me.

gd luck

p.s. those who have been following me for a while excuse me if this  post contains some elements that are repetitive, i have done some 2 or 3 posts about freedom and stuff in past, so its possible that i might have used some of this points before..

  4. Maya is the core attachment, but then have we ever understood the detached life. I see a whole lot of those hermits who say they left maya but are crazily into worldly possessions. Is maya all? aren't we much less superior than what we claim to be? a human isn't a god-like creature … they are just a wee bit bigger organism than an earthworm or ants. There's nothing spectacular abt us … the brains suck now, something we so greatly felt proud of.

  7. Maya is something that keeps us binded and which is why this world exists. Without it perhaps the world would be full of animals than humans. It is all about how you can survive in peace and harmony. Celibacy is not what we humans are designed to practice. I feel those who do are in serious need of treatment. The recent case of Nithyananda is a good example. I can accept a married Swamiji, but I can't accept a dhongi.Well, it's up to people to figure out Maya for themselves. I have my perception and I wish to live with it.
