My experiments with Life

An email forward, and flawed logic

with 15 comments

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.
He asks one of his new students to stand and……

Prof:
So you believe in God?

Student:
Absolutely, sir.

Prof
: Is God good?

Student:
Sure.

Prof:
Is God all-powerful?

Student
: Yes..

Prof:
My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him.
Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn’t. How is this God good then? Hmm?
(Student is silent.)

Prof:
You can’t answer, can you? Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?

Student:
:Yes.

Prof:
Is Satan good?

Student
: No.

Prof:
Where does Satan come from?

Student:
From….God…

Prof:
That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student:
Yes.

Prof:
Evil is everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything. Correct?

Student:
Yes.

Prof:
So who created evil?
(Student does not answer.)

Prof:
Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?

Student:
Yes, sir.

Prof:
So, who created them?
(Student has no answer.)

Prof:
Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you.
Tell me, son…Have you ever
 seen God?

Student:
No, sir.

Prof:
Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

Student:
No, sir.

Prof:
Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student:
No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.

Prof:
Yet you still believe in Him?

Student:
Yes.

Prof:
According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn’t exist.
What do you say to that, son?

Student:
Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof:
Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student:
Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof:
Yes.

Student:
And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof:
Yes.

Student:
No sir. There isn’t.
(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student
: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat..
But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t
go any further after that.

There is no such thing as cold
. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat
We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it .
(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student:
What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof:
Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?

Student :
You’re wrong again, sir.
Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright
light, flashing light…..But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? In
reality, darkness isn’t. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Prof:
So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student:
Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof:
Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student:
Sir, you are working on the premise of duality.. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought.. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof:
If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student:
Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student:
Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)

Student:
Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?
(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student
: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir.
With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof:
I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.

Student:
That is it sir…
The link between man & god is FAITH . That is all that keeps things moving & alive.

I have got this email forward many a times and today i m gonna speak about it.. this is a fine example of flawed logic, at first the argument might seem relevant but it isnt..

the example of heat and darkness is plain stupidity, the argument is just unrelated, and “cold” is not the opposite of “heat”, actually i think “hot” is the opposite of “cold”.

And evolution is just not a theory, well documented fossils have been found throughout the world, so nobody has to see evolution, the proofs are there which nobody can refute.. and the argument about professors brain you just need to take an MRI or CAT scan to see it.. and if you have to touch and smell it, just fucking operate his head once he is dead.

  3. interesting conversation…and one cant compare science with belief or faith. Faith does wonders to a person and i guess science to humanity in constructive and destructive ways!!!

  4. @vici.. as i said heat shouldnt have been used in first place if cold was used.. hot and cold are what should be used… heat is energy, hot and cold are perceptions..and in example for darkness, if the substance doesnt reflect light then also darkness can be achieved.. eg. black holes.. so darkness is not necessarility absense of light..and the argument is totally out of the blue, i dont understand how its related to an atheist debate..@sangita .. thnx for the comment@sweeliee.. faith has been more destructive to the world than science..

  5. I have read this forward and it does in a skewered way makes sense. There is a difference in theory and its practicality that's why even today the evolution of man is questioned similar to the Big Bang theory something that fails to explain why Earth is the only planet with life forms and not the others surrounding it.

  6. @survivor.. evolution is an accepted fact, and big bang is the only logical explanation currently available.. and both makes sensewell earth is the only planet that has optimum temparature to sustain life, other planets in the solar system are either too hot or too cold..certainly there could be life forms in millions of other un explored planets and stars… the probablity is very high..

  7. The fact is it still stand as an accepted theory and nobody has actually seen happen it.We should know that whenever we try out our ideas in reality it runs into many issues that were not thought of when we came up with the idea. The same logic is applied to theory as well. So one cannot say they are always 100% accurate.how did life came into existence? and what is the optimum temperature to sustain life? We try to connect the evolution of life with water, so with that logic life should have sustained in Mars, and also on Moon as we found evidence of water in these planets. There are many things which are beyond the realm of logic. It still baffles me how the Egyptians built the pyramids of giza with the alignment to the stars when the telescope was not even invented and they did not posses the kind of technology to look outside earth at that time.

  8. @survivor.. nobody has to see a murder to convict a murderer, its done on the basis of evidences found against him,, same way evolution has not to be seen, its based on the fossils and other proofs available…water can certainly be considered an important factor in formation of life, but then its not the only one… if u see the origin of the planets and formation of life on earth.. u can understand it was just an accident,, and accidents dont happen everywhere.. the life on planet earth is just an accident… ppl have been watching starts since pre historic times, its on the basis of stars that time is calculated.. and almost all ancient civilisations studied the sky.. so the alingment according to the stars can be seen in all ancient structures.. wether its stone henge, angkor temples, pyramids or others.. solar clocks and all were common.. it certainly is sometimes unbelevable how they built them without modern technologies but we always underestimate human intelligence.. most civilisations were aware of planets with observations from naked eye..

  12. I won't say I completely accept this mail, but then the theory of faith exists in science as well. Documented proof is not available for everyone to test and verify. We, as believers of science, sometimes use our faith to accept it.I don't know God can be explained as a finite being, but there's definitely a need to discipline a person. If law had such powers, there would be no God. Creating a fear factor among men (and women) about God curtails a few demonic instincts as well. Overall, this was a good one, but wish your clarification was more on the mail.

  13. Flawed logic is a way of fooling people and it is widely used in advertisements. They try and link two unrelated things to make it look genuine and out of this world. I don't know who are they fooling!

  14. @sorcy thanks for the comment@saurabh.. very true, i dont understand y ppl try so hard to promote their belief@darshan.. yeh read that one, u hv given a detailed explanation there… @idle.. problem with the world is that they think morality and religion is linked.. thts not true.. morality and sense of right and wrong is embeded in every person… there is no need of god here to force morality into ppl..@vittal.. true,, and the main thing is that, ppl get easily fooled by it,, and simply dont question the logic behind such tales
